THIS IS A TRUE AND REAL QUESTION, WOULD LIKE A TRUE AND REAL ANSWER. MY FAMILY GOT TOGETHER LAST WEEKEND AND WE TALK ALOT OF FOOTBALL SMACK TO EACH OTHER, BECAUSE I WENT TO CAROLINA, MY YOUNGEST BROTHER WENT TO CLEMSON, AND THE OLDEST BROTHER WENT TO FLORIDA ST. WE ALL WENT TO BYRNES, AND PLAYED FOOTBALL, AN BASEBALL. BUT THE NAME CLINTON CAME UP AND THIS BOARD, WE ALL AGREED CLINTON AND BYRNES WERE NEVER ANY KIND OF RIVAL. IN 3A IT WAS ALWAYS BYRNES AND GREER AND WOODRUFF, IN 4A IT WAS ALWAYS BYRNES AND DORMAN AN SPARTANBURG. SO WHY NOW IS IT CLINTON AND BYRNES A 3A RIVAL WITH A 4A ON THIS BOARD. WHAT IS THE POINT. CLINTON HAS ALWAYS HAD A GREAT TEAM BUT WHY ALL THE SMACK ON BYRNES ? WHY NOT CLINTON AND UNION OR SOMEONE IN YOUR OWN CLASS?

Son, you and your family must be too young to remember. Back in the seventies and eighties Clinton and Byrnes were in the same region and they were Bitter Rivals. The region title was always a battle between the two teams. As you know the Red Devils won most of them. Clinton has been in the National spotlight many times. Before there were so many polls and such. The Red Devils were always in the USA Today's top ten nationally.
Now the reason the old timers hate Byrnes. During one of the games at Byrnes Clinton had a player that had been hurt earlier in the year. He had a severe head injury. The doctors said he could attend the game. As he was walking up the small hill to go to the dressing room at half-time, some Byrnes guys jumped him and he had a terrible set back. Now you know the real story! That's the night the Red Devils beat Byrnes twice in one night. You may have already heard. Once on the filed, and once off the field.

It hasn't ben tooolong Byrnes went to 4a. Hell they couldn't win in 3A. The problem is that Byrnes thinks they are the only team that's ever won a ballgame. What's so bad, when they start losing again, all the wins now will not matter. It will come, it will not take long before other teams will cath up and when they do, it's a long hard drop to the bottom. Devils been there and done that. The people and fans will always expect nothing but Championships no matter how many game you win from then on. I hate it for Byrnes when that day comes.

When i played for Byrnes and we played Clinton, we as a team hated playing Clinton because it was always a dirty game, not even a real football game, more like who could play the dirtiest. I cant tell you how many time i got tobacco spit in my eyes on the field, i even went to the ref and showed him it was dripping off my helmet. No Flag. He said play ball. Dirt being shoved in my face after the play, even got my hand crushed in one game. Did not like playing Clinton, Rivals we were not. Byrnes did not see Clinton as a Rival. Maybe Clinton Fans did but not Byrnes, It was all about location for a Rival. Greer vs Byrnes was the biggest Rival for Byrnes, Gaffney, Woodruff, Spartanburg and Dorman. Clinton was just to for out there for a Rival for us. Trust me i know what was talked about in school and out of school, in the locker room and on the field. We moved to Duncan in 1955 My whole Family went to Duncan/ Byrnes High School and Clinton was never thought of as a Rival. Could have been bad blood, but never a Rival.

Never happened, i checked this out with the Chief of Police of Duncan, and he would have a record of this event. He said there was always fights at every game but never a mob fight at all, players or fans. The only big fight was after Greer vs Byrnes game in the Parking lot after the game. 12 people went to jail, and released in about 3 hrs. with a $25 fine. My father was a Grad. of Byrnes in 1956 and has only missed 6 games, home or away from 1955- Date, He also said it never happened. If the young man that you speak of had some guys jump on him at Byrnes back in the day, Let me say that I am sorry it happened, I as a Byrnes Grad, and Fan will never say things like that don't happened , But i can say it want happen around me, i don't care if its Byrnes Fan or any other fans or players, its not going to happen around me or my family, and the people of Duncan know i stand by what i say.

You can tell your Chief he is wrong. No one was arrested, the fight was among the players. Back in those days they didn't arrest the players for brawls as they do now. I know darn well it happened I was there and the guy that got jumped is a great friend of mine. 1973 was the year and we whooped Byrnes by a score of 22-0. So you tell your chief his is wrong. The players, not the fans fought. The guy that got jumped still has problems now. I know it happened, I was a player on the team! That's the night the Byrnes players got whooped twice in one night!

"On other thing as Pitchfork would say: "Do you know what the Byrnes Players got on their SAT's?" Tobacco Juice" Thats one juicy story ;D If i ever see your friend, I will tell him myself as a former Player at Byrnes, I am sorry that ever happened to him, there was no reason for that kind of stuff then, or now. TOTALLY UNCALLED FOR ! Please express that to him, and all the Clinton Old Timers. It sounds alot like poor coaching, with no control or discipline on the part of both teams, But if Byrnes started this mess, then I understand why Clinton is pissed off at Byrnes. As for now, I am a High School Football Fan, and my Team is Byrnes. I cant change the past but i can try to make a difference in the future. Best of Luck for them Devils in 08.
